Amy Patterson is a retired art teacher and artist. Prior to retirement she worked mostly with ceramics where her love affair with texture translated well into her work with clay. But while completing her Master's Degree in fine arts, her thesis involved a medium with which Amy had little or no prior experience, that of oil painting. This led her to focus her creative endeavors into painting with oils.

Her paintings began as an exploration of the skies and how they were affected by the variety of conditions in the atmosphere due to time of day and weather. As Amy’s interests grew and shifted her paintings included not only the sky but reflections in water and other landscape elements. Her developing style of intense color and textures created through the use of the palette knife became her signature.

Ever searching for new creative courses of endeavor Amy was introduced to R & F oil sticks. She discovered the joy of applying and moving paint around the canvas with these paint sticks and other tools. Over the last few years, her style of painting has become more abstract. Amy's passion for texture has been satisfied by creating marks through the use of tools, such as lace and brayers, and the use of techniques such as layering and sgrafitto. Many of Amy's paintings now involve the investigations of color interactions, intensity and texture. This website contains works that show Amy's growth in style through several stages of creative exploration and stands as a testament to her creative spirit. Amy continues to grow and evolve in her paintings. She is also creating in clay again, where texture is not surprisingly a strong component of her work.

Mrs. Patterson’s paintings have been shown in the Alabama Watercolor Society Exhibit, Georgia Art Education Association Members Exhibit, the Georgia Art Education Association Governor’s Exhibit, University of West Georgia Graduate and Alumni Exhibits, Columbus Artists’ Guild Members Exhibitions, the Georgia National Fair, the National League of American PenWomen Biennial Exhibit in Atlanta, the Bank of America on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Site 109 Gallery in New York, NLAPW Biennial Exhibits in Atlanta, GA and Washington, DC.
